How to care for your jacket
Material-by-material care, smart storage and simple fixes that keep jackets looking sharp season after season.
Care by material
| Material | Do | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Leather | Wipe with a damp cloth; condition 2–3 times a year | Water soaking, heat drying, plastic covers |
| Denim | Wash rarely, cold and inside out; hang dry | Hot washes and tumble drying |
| Down puffer | Gentle cycle with down wash; tumble low with dryer balls | Fabric softener, storing compressed |
| Wool | Brush after wear; spot clean or professional clean | Hot water and wringing |
| Waxed cotton | Sponge with cold water; re-wax worn areas yearly | Detergent, washing machines |
| Nylon shell | Wash cool with technical wash; reproof the finish | Fabric softener, high heat |
Always check the care label first; it overrides general advice.
Storing jackets the right way
- Use shaped hangers with broad shoulders so jackets keep their form.
- Clean before storing: body oils and stains set over time.
- Choose breathable covers made of cotton, not plastic.
- Give puffers space; don’t keep them compressed for months.
- Empty the pockets to stop the fabric stretching.
Quick fixes
Sticky zip
Rub a graphite pencil or a little beeswax along the teeth, then work the slider gently.
Loose button
Re-sew with a thread shank so the button sits slightly proud of the fabric.
Creased leather
Hang it in a steamy bathroom, then smooth with your hands; never iron leather directly.
Flat puffer
Tumble on low with clean tennis or dryer balls to redistribute the insulation.
Pilled wool
Use a fabric comb or shaver lightly, working in one direction.
Water no longer beading
Wash with a technical cleaner and apply a spray-on reproofer as directed.
